The Suburban

Today’s clever cocktail combines the unlikely duo of Rum and Rye. We were recently introduced to the idea of mixing these two base spirits to create a complex foundation for cocktails. Drawing on the sweet caramel richness of Jamaican rum and the herbal, peppery characters of American Rye whiskey we can only wonder why we haven’t thought of this sooner. Yet this was documented in practice with the Suburban dating back to the golden age of cocktails in the late 19th century. Add to the Rum and Rye combination a bit of port wine and bitters for a wild combination that settles well and tastes wonderful together.

The Suburban

In a large old fashioned glass filled with ice add:

  • 1 ½ Ounces Rye Whiskey
  • ½ Ounce Jamaican Dark Rum
  • ½ Ounce Ruby Port
  • 1 Dash Orange Bitters
  • 1 Dash Angostura Bitters

Stir to combine and lightly chill. Garnish with a Maraschino cherry.
