Have you heard the one about the soda maker, vodka salesman and Russian woman? One fateful day in 1941 Russian immigrant Sophie Berezinski walks into the Cock ‘n’ Bull restaurant in Hollywood. She was desperate to sell 2000 copper mugs that her father made in Russia. Luck had it that at that very time John G. Martin the president of Heublein was meeting at the bar with Cock ‘n’ Bull owner John A. Morgan. Seems Martin who recently bought the rights to Smirnoff Vodka was experiencing sluggish sales. In the 1940’s vodka was unheard of and he was on the hook for buying the brand. Morgan had problems of his own selling his signature Cock ‘n’ Bull Ginger Beer. On that fateful day, the simple concoction of Vodka, Ginger Beer and Lime met with the Copper mug and the Moscow Mule was invented. The mug is elemental in that Copper is a great conductor and keeps the drink exceptionally cold. Today we share with you the Moscow Mule, a simple recipe that put Smirnoff on the map. We have also included one of our favorite variations, the Kentucky Mule, a great winter version made with Bourbon. Cheers!
