Avocado Cocktails
We recently came across a few recipes for cocktails made with Avocado and were excited to venture into new territory. The Avocado is one giant berry with an equally giant seed in the center. The creamy pale green flesh of the berry is loaded with nutrients and good fatty compounds being a healthful food. In a cocktail we can see Avocado adding texture and a unique savory component.
Reading through numerous recipes for Cocktails made with Avocado we found that most call to muddle the Avocado into the drink with varied clear spirits, ranging from Tequila to Gin. The addition of sugar and some type of citrus to balance the fattiness of the Avocado was typical to most of the recipes.
We chose to take the route of making an Avocado-Lime Syrup and then fiddled with the base spirits afterwards. The idea of muddling the avocado seems to pose problems of chunkiness and a less than creamy texture. To make the Avocado-Lime Syrup we did the following:
Avocado-Lime Syrup
In a Blender
- Add One Good Sized Skinned and Seeded Ripe Avocado
- 4 Ounces of Lime Juice
- 8 Ounces of Simple Syrup (To Taste)
Puree the Whole Together. The result is a pale green, pea soup looking syrup that is creamy and tart and sweet all at once!
Now we needed to decide on a base spirit for our Avocado Cocktail creation. Tequila is the obvious culinary choice but overpowers the subtle avocado flavor. Gin adds an interesting juniper spice to the mix while Vodka and Light Rum provide a more neutral base, better showcasing the Avocado. We settled on Light Rum and offer you the following:
The Avocado Daiquiri
In a Shaker Glass Filled with Ice
- 1 ½ Ounces Light Rum (Bacardi will do!)
- 3 Ounces Avocado-Lime Syrup
Shake Until Painfully Cold. Strain into a Martini Saucer. Garnish with Lime or Some Avocado Whim.
The Avocado Daiquiri is light and refreshing. This is a great icebreaker cocktail when entertaining with pre-dinner Hors D’oeuvres. Once you make the Avocado-Lime Syrup you can experiment with spirits and create Avocado Margaritas, Gimlets, Coolers, Colada’s and who knows what. Have fun!
