The Oaxacan Spicy Paloma

Today we share with you a version of the Paloma, Mexico’s real favorite cocktail. Instead of using Tequila we are employing its smoky cousin, Mezcal. It is a drink that you can whip up in batches if you have a crowd to please. It is spicy, slightly sweet, slightly tart and subtly smoky making it the perfect foil to foods with big flavors.

The Oaxacan Spicy Paloma

In a Cocktail Shaker Glass Add:

  • 1 ½ Ounces Mezcal (we like Bosal Mezcal Espadin Barril Mexicano)
  • 3 ½” slices of Jalapeno
  • ½ Ounce Agave Nectar
  • ½ Ounce Lime Juice
  • 2 Ounces Fresh Ruby Red Grapefruit Juice

Muddle everything together then add ice and shake.  Strain into a Cocktail Glass (with or without ice your call) Rimmed with Tajin Seasoning (Chili Lime Salt).

For the Large Batch

In a Blender  Pitcher with No Ice Add:

  • 18 Ounces of Mezcal
  • 3 sliced Jalapenos
  • 6 Ounces of Agave Nectar
  • 3 Ounces Lime Juice
  • 12 Ounces of Ruby Red Grapefruit Juice

Cover and blend for 3 seconds just to combine ingredients.  Last Minute Pour Over Ice in a Pitcher.  Makes 6 Cocktails.

And for those wondering, the proper pronunciation for Oaxacan is Wuh + Haa + Kuhn.
