The Miami Vice

For today’s clever cocktail we share with you one of the bartenders least favorite drinks to make, the Miami Vice. It is actually the fusion of two classic frozen cocktails, layered in a glass. It requires the use of two blenders or at least two blended tops to properly create so unless you happen to have two blenders, call your neighbor and have them bring their Waring with them. The kind of tropical heat we are experiencing this week calls for ice cold, frozen tropical drinks and the Miami Vice is the one of the best. It required copious amounts of ice and a steadfast hand manning the blenders. Best made in batches, the recipe below will yield 10-12 ounce cocktails. Looking to make an impression on a hot summer day? The Miami Vice will bring rave reviews.

IN BLENDER # ONE (The Piña Colada)

In a 5 Cup Blender Add:

  • Fill Half Full with Ice
  • 4 Ounces White Rum (Bacardi Silver is Our Pick)
  • 4 Ounce Gold Rum (We Like Mt Gay)
  • 4 Ounce Cream of Coconut
  • 8 Ounce Pineapple Juice

Blend all ingredients until ice is chopped and drink is smooth gradually adding ice as you blend to finish with a full blender.

IN BLENDER # TWO (The Strawberry Daiquiri)

In a 5 Cup Blender Add:

  • Fill Half Full with Ice
  • 8 Ounces White Rum (Bacardi Silver is Our Pick)
  • 1 Pint Fresh Strawberries (hulled and topped)
  • 4 Ounces Fresh Lime Juice
  • 4 Ounces Simple Syrup (1:1 ratio sugar to water)

Blend all ingredients until ice is chopped and drink is smooth gradually adding ice as you blend to finish with a full blender.

TECHNIQUE TO BUILD

In a tall Hurricane or Collins glass layer the two drinks as you please. Some prefer the Strawberry Daiquiri on top while others prefer the Pina Colada on top or to pour the two side by side in the glass. A long-handled bar spoon will come in handy in the process. Garnish with a dead ripe strawberry, pineapple wedge, maraschino cherry or island inspiration of your own. Stay Cool Friends!
