As you drop south of Miami, Highway 1 meanders some 90 miles to Key West. Along that stretch of road are seafood shanty restaurants serving “Keys” fare of Cracked Conch, Fresh Fish a thousand ways and the ever popular Key Lime Pie. This Conch Republic signature dessert is the inspiration for the Key Lime Martini. Now we are typically not into Foo-Foo drinks but this cocktail emulates the dessert of its namesake so beautifully we cannot resist.
The base has to be Cuarenta Y Tres Liqueur also nicknamed Licor 43. It is a sweet cordial comprised of “43” ingredients showing vanilla, citrus and some herbal notes. The other crucial ingredient is Key Lime Juice. In a real pinch Roses Lime will do but best made with Nellie & Joe’s Original Key Lime Juice. The recipe is as follows:
Key Lime Pie Martini
In a Shaker Glass Filled with Ice Pour
- 2 Ounce Licor 43
- 1 Ounce Nellie and Joe’s Key Lime Juice
- 1 Ounce Heavy Cream
- ½ Ounce Simple Syrup to taste
Shake Like Crazy, Then Shake Some More! Strain into a Graham Cracker Crust Rimmed Martini Saucer. Top with Lime, Touch of Whipped Cream, Whatever!
