Mezcal, Tequila’s nearest cousin is a great cocktail mixer. Different from Tequila, it has a distinct earthy, smoky nature that adds a unique dimension to any classic cocktail. Today we share with you a drink that was created in Portland Oregon at Toro Bravo. It is a simple assemblage of a few ingredients that marry beautifully to create the “Rising Sun” cocktail. While there are more than a few cocktails with the same name, Toro Bravo’s rendition is one worth trying.
Toro Bravo’s: Rising Sun Cocktail
- 1 1⁄2 oz. Good Quality Mezcal
- 3⁄4 oz. fresh grapefruit juice
- 1⁄2 oz. fresh lime juice
- 1⁄2 oz. maraschino liqueur (we like Luxardo)
- Lime Wheel
- Pinch of salt
Add Mezcal, grapefruit juice, lime juice & maraschino liqueur to a shaker glass filled with ice. Shake vigorously and strain into a coupe glass. Garnish with lime wheel.
The recipe gave no instructions as how to use the pinch of salt listed in the ingredients so we decided to just do as any good chef does and just sprinkled that pinch on top of the finished cocktail. It added a nice surprise to a drink that is smoky, sweet, tart and then salty all at the same time.
Cheers!
