The Pumpkin Vandal

It seems at this time of year you can’t turn the corner without someone offering you a drink that has been embellished with pumpkin. It is in our beer, our coffee and even our martinis! So today with just a touch of fall in the air we offer you the Pumpkin Vandal. It is a drink we were introduced to a few years ago that is versatile in that you can enjoy it as a hot toddy or chilled like a dessert martini. The syrup keeps for two weeks in your refrigerator so you can make it ahead of time and when the mood strikes you are ready to Pumpkin Vandal.

The Pumpkin Syrup

  •  1 cup light brown sugar
  • 2 cup water
  • 5 tbs pumpkin puree
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • ½ tsp ground clove
  • 1 tsp ground allspice
  • 1 tsp ground nutmeg

Put the water and brown sugar in a saucepan and bring to a boil.  Reduce heat, add the ground spices and simmer for ten minutes.  Cool and strain through a fine sieve into a sterile bottle.  Spiced Pumpkin Syrup will keep in the refrigerator for 2 weeks.

 The Hot Vandal

In a Heatproof Mug

  • 2 ounces Good Dark Rum
  • 1 ounce Pumpkin Syrup
  • Top with Really Hot Water
  • Dust with Nutmeg


The Cold Vandal

 In a Shaker Glass with Ice Add

  • 2 ounces Good Dark Rum
  • 1 Ounce Pumpkin Syrup
  • ¼ Ounce Lemon Juice

Shake it like a Vandal and Strain into a Chilled Martini Glass.  Dust with Fresh Ground Nutmeg.
